West Africa
West Africa is a region of the African continent located in the westernmost part. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Sahara Desert to the north, the Central African region to the east, and the Gulf of Guinea to the south. The region consists of 16 countries and covers an area of approximately 5 million square kilometers.

West Africa's geography is diverse, with coastal plains in the west, a semi-arid Sahel belt in the center, and a savannah and forested area in the south. The region is home to several major rivers, including the Niger River, the Senegal River, and the Volta River.

The history of West Africa is marked by the rise and fall of several powerful African empires, such as the Ghana Empire, the Mali Empire, and the Songhai Empire. The region was a major hub for the trans-Saharan trade in gold, salt, and slaves. In the late 19th century, West Africa was colonized by European powers during the Scramble for Africa. The countries gained independence in the mid-20th century.
