The Rob Roy is a classic cocktail that has been enjoyed by many for over a century. Named after the Scottish folk hero Robert Roy MacGregor, the Rob Roy cocktail is essentially a Manhattan but is made exclusively with Scotch whisky.
Ingredients[edit | edit source]
The Rob Roy cocktail is made with the following ingredients:
- Scotch whisky
- Sweet vermouth
- Angostura bitters
- Maraschino cherry (for garnish)
Preparation[edit | edit source]
To prepare a Rob Roy cocktail, follow these steps:
- Pour 2 ounces of Scotch whisky, 1 ounce of sweet vermouth, and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters into a mixing glass filled with ice.
- Stir well until the mixture is well-chilled.
- Strain the mixture into a chilled cocktail glass.
- Garnish with a maraschino cherry.

There are several variations of the Rob Roy cocktail, including:
- Dry Rob Roy: This version uses dry vermouth instead of sweet vermouth.
- Perfect Rob Roy: This version uses equal parts of sweet and dry vermouth.
- Highland Rob Roy: This version uses a Scotch whisky from the Highland region.

The Rob Roy cocktail was created in 1894 by a bartender at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. The cocktail was named after the operetta Rob Roy which was premiering at the time.
