Rockville is a city located in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. It is the county seat and is considered one of the major cities in the Washington metropolitan area. With a population of 68,401 as of 2020, Rockville is the third-largest city in Maryland.

Rockville was established in 1717 and was originally known as "Owen's Ordinary" after a local innkeeper. It was later renamed to Rockville due to the rocky terrain in the area. The city grew steadily over the years, and in 1801, it became the county seat of Montgomery County.
During the 19th century, Rockville experienced significant growth with the construction of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. This led to increased trade and commerce, further boosting the city's economy. In the early 20th century, Rockville saw the development of residential neighborhoods and the establishment of government institutions.
