Rockville Centre is a village located in Nassau County, New York, United States. It is situated in the southwestern part of the county, approximately 25 miles (40 km) east of Manhattan. With a population of 24,082 as of the 2010 census, Rockville Centre is the 18th largest village in New York State.

History[edit | edit source]

Rockville Centre was first settled by English colonists in the late 17th century. Originally known as "Rockville", the village was named after a local stream called "Rockaway River". The name was later changed to "Rockville Centre" to avoid confusion with the nearby village of Rockaway.

In the late 19th century, Rockville Centre experienced significant growth due to the construction of the Long Island Rail Road. The village became a popular residential area for commuters working in New York City. In 1893, Rockville Centre was officially incorporated as a village.

. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.0 square miles (10.3 km2), all of which is land.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2010 census, there were 24,082 people, 9,201 households, and 6,468 families residing in the village. The population density was 6,052.5 per square mile (2,339.4/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 85.3% White, 4.9% African American, 0.1% Native American, 5.7% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.8% of the population.

Rockville Centre is served by the Rockville Centre Union Free School District, which operates several public schools in the village. The district includes three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The village is also home to several private schools, including St. Agnes Cathedral School and South Side High School.
