History[edit | edit source]
The area where Rocky Mount is situated was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Tuscarora and Saponi tribes. The city's strategic location along the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad made it a target for Union forces. The Battle of Rocky Mount took place in 1863, resulting in the Union Army's capture of the city.
