Rohypnol

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Rohypnol is a trade name for the drug Flunitrazepam, a benzodiazepine that is used in the short-term treatment of insomnia and as a premedication for surgery. Rohypnol has also gained infamy over the years due to its illicit use as a date rape drug.

Medical Uses[edit | edit source]

Rohypnol is primarily used as a short-term treatment for severe insomnia, particularly in patients who have difficulty falling asleep. It is also used as a premedication for surgical procedures where general anesthesia is required.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

The side effects of Rohypnol include drowsiness, headache, memory impairment, dizziness, and nightmares. In some cases, it can also cause physical dependence and withdrawal symptoms.

Illicit Use[edit | edit source]

Rohypnol is often used illicitly as a recreational drug due to its sedative and amnesic effects. It is also known as a date rape drug because it can be slipped into a person's drink without their knowledge, causing them to become incapacitated and unable to resist sexual assault.

Legal Status[edit | edit source]

In many countries, including the United States, Rohypnol is a controlled substance and its distribution is strictly regulated. However, it is still available in some countries under prescription.
