Royal Lochnagar distillery
Royal Lochnagar Distillery[edit | edit source]
The Royal Lochnagar Distillery is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery based in Crathie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is named after the nearby Lochnagar mountain.
History[edit | edit source]
The distillery was established in 1826 by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPherson. It was granted a Royal Warrant in 1848 by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, who were staying at the nearby Balmoral Castle. This led to the prefix 'Royal' being added to the distillery's name.
Production[edit | edit source]
The Royal Lochnagar Distillery produces a range of single malt whiskies, including the 12-year-old Royal Lochnagar, the Distillers Edition, and the Selected Reserve. The distillery uses traditional methods of whisky production, with copper pot stills and oak casks for maturation.
Visitor Centre[edit | edit source]
The distillery has a visitor centre, which offers guided tours and tastings. It is part of the Scottish Whisky Trail, a popular tourist route that includes several other distilleries in Scotland.
In Popular Culture[edit | edit source]
The Royal Lochnagar Distillery has been featured in various media, including the television series Monarch of the Glen and the film The Angel's Share.
