History[edit | edit source]

RMIT was established as the Working Men's College of Melbourne in 1887. It was founded by Francis Ormond, a prominent philanthropist, with the aim of providing education to working men. The college was officially opened on June 4, 1887, with 320 students enrolled in its first year.

In 1934, it was renamed the Melbourne Technical College. During World War II, the college contributed significantly to the war effort by training military personnel and producing munitions. In 1954, it was granted royal patronage by Queen Elizabeth II for its service to the Commonwealth in the field of education and was renamed the Royal Melbourne Technical College.

In 1960, it became the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. RMIT gained university status in 1992 under the Australian government's reforms to higher education.
