Rudy Vallee

Rudy Vallee (July 28, 1901 – July 3, 1986) was an American singer, actor, bandleader, and radio host. He was one of the first modern pop stars of the teen idol type.

Early life[edit | edit source]

Rudy Vallee was born Hubert Prior Vallée in Island Pond, Vermont, the son of Charles Alphonse and Catherine Lynch Vallée. At the age of 15, he decided to enlist for the Spanish-American War but was turned down because of his age. He enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17 and was stationed in Newport, Rhode Island.

Career[edit | edit source]

In the 1920s and early 1930s, Vallee was a popular singer and bandleader. He was known for his distinctive "crooning" style, as well as for playing the saxophone. His band, the Connecticut Yankees, had a number of hit records. His most famous song, "My Time Is Your Time", was a staple of the Vaudeville era.

In addition to his music career, Vallee also had a successful career in radio and film. He hosted the popular radio show, "The Fleischmann's Yeast Hour", which later became "The Rudy Vallee Show". He appeared in more than 50 films, including "The Vagabond Lover" and "Sweet Music".

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Vallee was married four times. His first wife was Leonie Cauchois, a high school sweetheart. His second wife was actress Fay Webb. His third wife was actress Jane Greer. His fourth and final wife was Eleanor Norris, whom he married in 1949 and remained with until his death.

Death[edit | edit source]

Vallee died on July 3, 1986, in Hollywood, California. He was 84 years old. His death was attributed to cancer.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Rudy Vallee is remembered as one of the pioneers of the "crooner" style of singing, which was later popularized by singers like Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. He is also remembered for his contributions to radio and film.
