Russian deep submergence rescue vehicle AS-28 is a Priz-class deep-submergence rescue vehicle operated by the Russian Navy. Designed for submarine rescue operations, AS-28 is capable of diving to depths where conventional rescue methods are not feasible. Its construction and operational capabilities reflect the advancements in underwater rescue technology and the importance of deep-sea recovery missions in modern naval operations.

Design and Capabilities[edit | edit source]

The AS-28 is part of the Priz class, which is specifically designed for deep-sea rescue operations. These vehicles are equipped with sophisticated navigation systems, life-support systems, and tools for cutting through debris or obstacles that may entrap a submarine. The AS-28 can dock with submarines stranded at depths up to 1000 meters, providing a lifeline to crews trapped beneath the sea.

Operational History[edit | edit source]

One of the most notable incidents involving the AS-28 occurred in August 2005. The vehicle became entangled in fishing nets and cables while conducting an operation in the Bering Sea, trapping its seven crew members underwater. An international rescue effort was launched, highlighting the global importance of submarine rescue capabilities and cooperation among naval forces worldwide. After several days, the AS-28 was successfully freed with the help of a British remotely operated vehicle (ROV), saving the lives of all crew members aboard.

Importance in Naval Operations[edit | edit source]

The AS-28 and vehicles of its class represent critical assets in the field of submarine rescue. Submarines operate in a high-risk environment, where accidents can leave crews isolated at depths unreachable by traditional rescue methods. Deep submergence rescue vehicles like the AS-28 provide a vital capability to recover submariners from perilous situations, enhancing the safety of underwater naval operations and fostering international collaboration in maritime rescue efforts.
