The company was founded in 1886 by Samuel Curtis Johnson Sr. and has been privately held by the Johnson family since its inception.

S. C. Johnson & Son was established in 1886 when Samuel Curtis Johnson Sr. purchased the parquet flooring business of Racine Hardware Company. The company initially focused on flooring and wood care products, but it expanded its product line over the years to include a wide range of household cleaning supplies and consumer chemicals.
