SHALVA, the Israel Association for the Care and Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities, is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities and their families. Founded in 1990 by Malki and Kalman Samuels, SHALVA provides a wide range of tailored, life-encompassing services, from infancy through adulthood, empowering participants to achieve their fullest potential. The organization is renowned for its commitment to fostering an inclusive society where people with disabilities can live with dignity, respect, and equal opportunities.

History[edit | edit source]

The inception of SHALVA was inspired by the personal journey of its founders, Malki and Kalman Samuels, whose son, Yossi, became blind and deaf following a faulty DPT vaccination. The challenges they faced in seeking adequate care and support for Yossi led them to establish SHALVA. What began as a small support group in the Samuels' living room has evolved into one of Israel's leading organizations in the field of disability care and inclusion.

Programs and Services[edit | edit source]

SHALVA offers a comprehensive range of programs and services designed to address the needs of individuals with disabilities across their lifespan. These include:

  • Early intervention programs
  • Therapeutic programs
  • Educational frameworks
  • Recreational activities
  • Vocational training
  • Independent living support
  • Advocacy and community outreach

Each program is tailored to meet the unique needs of its participants, promoting their development, independence, and integration into the community.

Facilities[edit | edit source]

The SHALVA National Center, located in Jerusalem, serves as the organization's headquarters. This state-of-the-art facility is equipped to provide a wide array of services and programs under one roof, making it a hub of activity and support for individuals with disabilities and their families.

Impact and Recognition[edit | edit source]

SHALVA's innovative approach to disability care and inclusion has garnered both national and international recognition. The organization's commitment to excellence and its comprehensive, family-centered model of care have made it a model for other institutions worldwide.

Volunteerism and Community Engagement[edit | edit source]

Volunteerism is a cornerstone of SHALVA's philosophy. Hundreds of volunteers from Israel and abroad contribute their time and skills to support SHALVA's programs, playing a crucial role in the organization's operations and the lives of its participants.

Future Directions[edit | edit source]

SHALVA continues to expand its services and outreach, with plans to develop new programs that address emerging needs within the community of individuals with disabilities. The organization remains dedicated to breaking down barriers to inclusion and advocating for a society in which everyone can lead a fulfilling life.
