SS Breda was a Dutch passenger-cargo ship owned by the Koninklijke Paketvaart-Maatschappij (KPM). The ship was built in 1921 by the Nederlandsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij in Amsterdam and was named after the city of Breda in the Netherlands.

History[edit | edit source]

The SS Breda was primarily used for transporting passengers and cargo between the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). The ship had a capacity of 152 passengers and could carry a variety of cargo, including coal, rubber, and spices.

In 1940, during World War II, the SS Breda was requisitioned by the British Ministry of War Transport and used as a troopship. On December 23, 1940, while anchored in the Sound of Mull off the west coast of Scotland, the ship was bombed and sunk by German aircraft.

Wreck[edit | edit source]

The wreck of the SS Breda lies at a depth of approximately 30 meters and is a popular site for scuba diving. The ship is largely intact, and divers can explore the cargo holds, engine room, and passenger cabins. The wreck is also home to a variety of marine life, including conger eels, lobsters, and various species of fish.
