STI
(Redirected from STIs)
STI or Sexually Transmitted Infections are infections that are commonly spread by sexual activity, especially vaginal intercourse, anal sex and oral sex. Many times STIs initially do not cause symptoms. This results in a greater risk of passing the infection on to others. Symptoms and signs of disease may include vaginal discharge, penile discharge, ulcers on or around the genitals, and pelvic pain. Some STIs can also be transmitted via the use of IV drug needles after its use by an infected person, as well as through childbirth or breastfeeding.
Types of STIs[edit | edit source]
STIs can be caused by a variety of organisms, including bacteria, viruses, and parasites. The most common types of STIs include:
Prevention[edit | edit source]
Prevention strategies for STIs include vaccination, mutual monogamy, reducing the number of sexual partners, and use of barrier methods such as condoms. Regular screening for STIs is also recommended in sexually active individuals to identify and treat infections before they can be transmitted to others.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment depends on the specific type of STI. Bacterial STIs like chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis can be treated and cured with antibiotics. Viral STIs like HIV and herpes cannot be cured, but their symptoms can be managed with medication.
