Saban Entertainment was an American television production company formed in 1980 by Haim Saban. The company primarily specialized in producing children's television series, particularly in the action-adventure genre, and was best known for its role in bringing the Power Rangers franchise to a global audience.
History[edit | edit source]
Saban Entertainment was founded in 1980 by Haim Saban, an Israeli-American music and television producer. The company initially focused on importing, dubbing, and distributing foreign children's television programs in the United States. One of its first major successes was the adaptation of the French animated series Les Mystérieuses Cités d'Or (The Mysterious Cities of Gold).
In the early 1990s, Saban Entertainment struck gold with the launch of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a series that used footage from the Japanese Super Sentai series, combined with American-produced segments. The show became a cultural phenomenon, leading to numerous spin-offs, movies, and merchandise.
Throughout the 1990s, Saban Entertainment expanded its portfolio, producing and distributing a wide range of children's programming, including VR Troopers, Big Bad Beetleborgs, and Digimon: Digital Monsters.
In 2001, Saban Entertainment was sold to The Walt Disney Company, and its library and assets were absorbed into Disney Television Animation and other Disney divisions. The company ceased operations in 2002.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Saban Entertainment left a lasting impact on the children's television landscape. Its innovative approach to adapting foreign content for American audiences paved the way for future international collaborations in the entertainment industry. The Power Rangers franchise remains one of the most enduring legacies of Saban Entertainment, continuing to produce new series and films under various owners.
