Saint-Véran AOC
French wine AOC in the Mâconnais subregion of Burgundy
Saint-Véran is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) for wine in the southern part of the Burgundy region of France. It is located in the Mâconnais subregion, which is known for its production of Chardonnay wines. The appellation was established in 1971 and covers several communes in the Saône-et-Loire department.
Geography and Climate[edit | edit source]
The Saint-Véran AOC is situated in the southernmost part of the Mâconnais, bordering the Beaujolais wine region to the south. The area is characterized by its rolling hills and limestone-rich soils, which are ideal for growing Chardonnay grapes. The climate is continental, with warm summers and cold winters, providing a long growing season that allows the grapes to develop complex flavors.
Viticulture[edit | edit source]
The vineyards of Saint-Véran are planted primarily with Chardonnay, the only grape variety permitted under the AOC regulations. The vines benefit from the region's limestone soils, which contribute to the minerality and freshness of the wines. The vineyards are typically planted on slopes, which provide good drainage and exposure to sunlight, enhancing the ripening process.
Wine Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Saint-Véran wines are known for their elegance and balance. They typically exhibit aromas of white flowers, citrus fruits, and stone fruits, with a hint of minerality. On the palate, these wines are fresh and lively, with a good balance of acidity and fruit flavors. The wines are usually unoaked, allowing the natural characteristics of the Chardonnay grape to shine through.
Production[edit | edit source]
The Saint-Véran AOC covers approximately 700 hectares of vineyards, producing around 40,000 hectoliters of wine annually. The production is dominated by small family-owned wineries, although some larger producers also operate in the area. The wines are primarily made for early consumption, although some can benefit from short-term aging.
