From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

SalMar is a Norwegian aquaculture company involved in the production of farmed salmon. The company was established in 1991 and has since grown to become one of the world's largest producers of farmed salmon. SalMar's operations are focused in Norway, but the company also has significant activities in Scotland and Iceland.

History[edit | edit source]

SalMar was founded in 1991 by Gustav Witzøe, who remains the company's largest shareholder. The company was initially focused on the production of smolt, but quickly expanded into the farming of adult salmon. In 1996, SalMar became the first company in the world to be certified under the Aquaculture Stewardship Council's standards for farmed salmon.

Operations[edit | edit source]

SalMar's operations are divided into three main segments: Farming Central Norway, Farming Northern Norway, and Sales & Processing. The Farming segments are responsible for the production of farmed salmon, while the Sales & Processing segment is responsible for the sale of the company's products and the processing of salmon into finished products.

The company operates a number of fish farms in Norway, Scotland, and Iceland. These farms are located in areas with optimal conditions for salmon farming, including clean, cold water and strong currents.

Sustainability[edit | edit source]

SalMar is committed to sustainable aquaculture practices. The company has implemented a number of measures to reduce its environmental impact, including the use of feed that is sourced from sustainable fisheries and the implementation of strict biosecurity measures to prevent disease.
