Samuel B. Newton was born in Massachusetts. He attended Williams College, where he played on the college's football team. His performance as a player laid the foundation for his future career in coaching.

Newton began his coaching career at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. He served as the head coach of the Lafayette Leopards football team from 1896 to 1898. During his tenure, he led the team to several successful seasons, establishing himself as a competent and innovative coach.

After leaving Lafayette, Newton took the position of head coach at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He coached the Lehigh Mountain Hawks football team from 1899 to 1901. Newton's next coaching position was at University of Virginia, where he coached the Virginia Cavaliers football team from 1902 to 1903. His tenure at Virginia was marked by a focus on developing the players' skills and implementing new training techniques.
