San Rafael is a city located in Marin County, California, United States. It is the county seat and the largest city in Marin County, with a population of approximately 59,000 residents as of 2021. The city is situated in the North Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area, about 20 miles north of San Francisco.

San Rafael was founded in 1817 as a Spanish mission and was named after the Archangel Raphael. It served as a mission outpost and later became a thriving agricultural community. In 1879, San Rafael was officially incorporated as a city.
Geography[edit | edit source]
San Rafael is located at 37°58'30"N 122°31'30"W (37.975, -122.525) and has a total area of 22.4 square miles, of which 16.5 square miles is land and 5.9 square miles is water. The city is bordered by the San Francisco Bay to the east, the city of Novato to the north, and the unincorporated communities of Marinwood and Lucas Valley-Marinwood to the west.

San Rafael has a Mediterranean climate with mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers. The city experiences an average annual rainfall of around 32 inches, mostly occurring between November and April. Summers are typically dry with temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit, while winters are cool with temperatures averaging in the mid-50s.
