Sarawak is one of the two Malaysian states on the island of Borneo. Known for its vast expanse of lush tropical rainforests, diverse indigenous cultures, and rich colonial history, Sarawak is bordered by the Malaysian state of Sabah to the northeast, Indonesia to the south, and surrounds the tiny nation of Brunei. The South China Sea lies to its northwest. Sarawak's administrative capital is Kuching, which is also one of its largest cities alongside Miri and Sibu.

History[edit | edit source]

Sarawak's history is marked by a unique colonial legacy, being ruled by the Brooke family, also known as the White Rajahs, from 1841 to 1946. James Brooke, an English adventurer, became the first White Rajah after helping the Sultan of Brunei quell a rebellion. The Brooke dynasty governed Sarawak as a personal kingdom, expanding its borders and implementing administrative reforms. In 1946, Sarawak became a British Crown Colony, before joining the Federation of Malaysia in 1963.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Sarawak is the largest state in Malaysia, covering an area of approximately 124,450 square kilometers. It features a rugged terrain with dense rainforests, a rich biodiversity, and a network of rivers, the most significant being the Rajang River, Malaysia's longest. The state's biodiversity includes numerous endemic species and protected areas, such as Gunung Mulu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its karst formations and cave systems.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

Sarawak is home to a diverse population, comprising various indigenous groups such as the Iban, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu, and Melanau, as well as Chinese, Malay, and Indian communities. This ethnic diversity is reflected in Sarawak's cultural festivals, languages, and cuisines. The official language is Malay, although English is widely spoken, and many indigenous languages are also in use.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Sarawak's economy is traditionally based on agriculture and forestry. However, in recent decades, it has diversified into sectors such as petroleum extraction, manufacturing, and tourism. The state is rich in natural resources, including timber, oil, and gas, contributing significantly to its GDP. Sarawak's efforts to develop its tourism industry have focused on eco-tourism, cultural experiences, and adventure tourism, leveraging its natural and cultural assets.

Government and Politics[edit | edit source]

Sarawak operates under a parliamentary system of government within the framework of a constitutional monarchy. The head of state is the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, while the head of government is the Chief Minister. Sarawak has its own legislature, the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly, which enacts state laws. The state sends representatives to the Malaysian Parliament and has a certain degree of autonomy, especially in immigration policies.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Sarawak's culture is a vibrant tapestry of traditions, languages, and religions, reflecting the diversity of its people. The state is renowned for its traditional crafts, such as beadwork, weaving, and pottery, as well as its music and dance. The Sarawak Cultural Village offers insights into the traditional lifestyles and heritage of the state's ethnic groups. Festivals such as the Rainforest World Music Festival highlight Sarawak's cultural richness and attract international visitors.

Tourism[edit | edit source]

Tourism in Sarawak is largely focused on its natural wonders and cultural heritage. Key attractions include the Bako National Park, known for its wildlife and distinct ecosystems; the Niah Caves, where prehistoric human remains have been found; and the aforementioned Gunung Mulu National Park. Sarawak also offers opportunities for adventure tourism, such as caving, jungle trekking, and river safaris.
