Scientific research

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Scientific research is a systematic way of gathering data and harnessing curiosity. This research provides scientific information and theories for the explanation of the nature and the properties of the world. It makes practical applications possible. Scientific research is funded by public authorities, by charitable organizations and by private groups, including many companies. Scientific research can be subdivided into different classifications according to their academic and application disciplines.

History[edit | edit source]

The history of scientific research ties directly into the history of science itself. The ancient Greeks were among the first to practice scientific research, with notable figures such as Aristotle and Archimedes contributing significantly to various scientific fields.

Types of Scientific Research[edit | edit source]

Scientific research can be classified into different types based on the methodology used and the knowledge it generates. The two main types of scientific research are basic research and applied research.

Basic Research[edit | edit source]

Basic research, also known as pure research, is exploratory in nature. It is driven by a scientist's curiosity or interest in a scientific question. The main motivation is to expand man's knowledge, not to create or invent something.

Applied Research[edit | edit source]

Applied research is designed to solve practical problems of the modern world, rather than to acquire knowledge for knowledge's sake. The goal of applied research is to improve the human condition. It focuses on analysis and solving social and real life problems.

Scientific Research Method[edit | edit source]

The scientific research method is a systematic way to study a scientific problem. The research process involves identifying, locating, assessing, and analyzing the information you need to support your research question, and then developing and expressing your ideas.
