Scream Queens is an American comedy horror television series that aired on Fox from September 22, 2015, to December 20, 2016. The series was created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan, who are also known for their work on Glee and American Horror Story. The show is a satirical take on the slasher film genre, blending elements of horror and comedy.

Plot Overview[edit | edit source]

The first season of Scream Queens is set at the fictional Wallace University, where a series of murders occur at the Kappa Kappa Tau sorority house. The story revolves around the sorority's president, Chanel Oberlin, played by Emma Roberts, and her minions, known as the "Chanels." The murders are committed by a killer known as the "Red Devil," whose identity is a central mystery of the season.

The second season shifts the setting to a hospital, where the Chanels, having been exonerated from the events of the first season, are now medical students. The hospital is run by Cathy Munsch, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, and becomes the site of a new series of murders committed by a killer known as the "Green Meanie."

Main Characters[edit | edit source]

  • Chanel Oberlin (Emma Roberts) - The self-absorbed and ruthless leader of the Chanels.
  • Cathy Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis) - The ambitious and manipulative dean of Wallace University and later the hospital administrator.
  • Hester Ulrich (Lea Michele) - A seemingly innocent pledge with a dark secret.
  • Zayday Williams (Keke Palmer) - A smart and determined student who challenges Chanel's authority.
  • Chanel #3 (Billie Lourd) - One of Chanel's loyal followers, known for her earmuffs.
  • Chanel #5 (Abigail Breslin) - Another of Chanel's minions, often the target of ridicule.

Production[edit | edit source]

Scream Queens was produced by 20th Century Fox Television and was filmed in New Orleans, Louisiana. The show was noted for its high production values, stylish costumes, and elaborate set designs. The series was praised for its witty dialogue and satirical take on horror tropes, though it received mixed reviews for its plot and character development.

Reception[edit | edit source]

The series received a mixed reception from critics and audiences. The first season was generally well-received for its humor and performances, particularly that of Jamie Lee Curtis. However, the second season saw a decline in viewership and critical reception, leading to the show's cancellation after two seasons.

Cultural Impact[edit | edit source]

Scream Queens contributed to the resurgence of the comedy horror genre on television and has been credited with influencing subsequent shows that blend horror and comedy. The series also sparked discussions about the portrayal of women in horror and the concept of the "scream queen" in popular culture.
