Screed refers to a flat board or a layer of material used to level off a horizontal surface, such as a floor, to receive a finishing layer. In construction, screed is often applied to create a smooth, level surface before the installation of flooring materials like tile, carpet, or wood. Screed can be made from a variety of materials, including sand and cement, fine concrete, or specialized self-leveling compounds.

  • Fiber Reinforced Screed: Fibers are added to the screed mix to improve its strength and reduce the risk of cracking.
  • Polymer Modified Screeds: These contain polymers that improve the screed's performance, making it more durable and resistant to moisture.

The application of screed requires careful preparation and execution. The process typically involves:

1. Preparing the Base: The base layer, often a layer of insulation or concrete, must be clean, stable, and level.

2. Mixing: The screed mixture must be prepared according to the manufacturer's instructions or the specific requirements of the job.

3. Laying: The screed is then poured, spread, and leveled over the base layer. This can be done manually with trowels or mechanically with screeding machines.

4. Curing: After laying, the screed must be allowed to cure properly, which involves keeping it moist and protected from extreme temperatures for a specified period.

Screed is used in a variety of settings, including residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Its primary purpose is to provide a smooth, level surface for the final floor covering. Additionally, screed can be used to encase underfloor heating systems, offering an efficient way to distribute heat evenly across a floor.

Challenges[edit | edit source]

While screed offers many benefits, there are challenges associated with its use. These include the need for precise mixing and application to avoid issues like cracking, curling, and uneven surfaces. The curing process is also critical; improper curing can lead to weak screed that may not support the intended loads or last as long as expected.
