Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University

Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) is a public university located in Ga-Rankuwa, within the Gauteng Province of South Africa. Established on the 1st of January, 2015, SMU was formed following the separation of the medical and dental schools from the University of Limpopo. The university is named after Sefako Makgatho, a prominent South African politician and former president of the African National Congress who was deeply involved in the struggle against apartheid and for the promotion of public health.

The establishment of Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University marked a significant milestone in the expansion and specialization of health sciences education in South Africa. The decision to create SMU was part of the government's strategy to address the critical shortage of healthcare professionals in the country and to improve the quality of health sciences education. The university took over the facilities and staff of the Medical University of Southern Africa (MEDUNSA), which had been a part of the University of Limpopo.
