Self-employed
Self-employment is a state where an individual works for themselves instead of an employer. These individuals earn their income through conducting profitable operations from a trade or business that they operate directly. This contrasts with salaried workers who earn a steady income and work for others. However, self-employment often leads to significant rewards for the individuals who are willing to take the risk.
Types of Self-Employment[edit | edit source]
There are various forms of self-employment. Some of the common types include sole traders, freelancers, independent contractors, and business owners.
- Sole trader is the simplest form of business structure and is not a legal entity. The sole trader assumes all the risks of the business to the extent of their assets, whether the business is a company or not.
- Freelancer is a term commonly used for a person who is self-employed and not necessarily committed to a particular employer long-term.
- Independent contractor is a natural person, business, or corporation that provides goods or services to another entity under terms specified in a contract or within a verbal agreement.
- Business owner is an individual who owns and oversees a business. They may also own the business directly or through a formally organized entity.
Advantages and Disadvantages[edit | edit source]
Self-employment has both advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages include the ability to be one's own boss, flexible work hours, and the potential for high income.
Disadvantages include a lack of company benefits, the responsibility of running a business, and the risk of financial failure.
Tax Implications[edit | edit source]
Self-employed individuals are responsible for their own tax and National Insurance contributions. They must register with the relevant tax authority and are required to file an annual return. They may also be required to make payments on account.
