Semuloparin is a novel anticoagulant medication, specifically designed to prevent venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients undergoing major orthopedic surgery, such as hip replacement or knee surgery. It belongs to the class of drugs known as ultra-low molecular weight heparins (ULMWHs). Semuloparin works by inhibiting factor Xa, a key protein in the coagulation process that leads to blood clot formation. By targeting factor Xa, semuloparin reduces the risk of developing dangerous blood clots without significantly increasing the risk of bleeding, a common side effect associated with anticoagulant therapy.
