Structure[edit | edit source]

The sensory nervous system is divided into two main parts: the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) and the Central Nervous System (CNS). The PNS consists of sensory neurons running from stimulus receptors that inform the CNS about the external or internal environment. The CNS is where all the analysis of sensory information takes place.

Peripheral Nervous System[edit | edit source]

The PNS is divided into the Somatic Nervous System and the Autonomic Nervous System. The somatic system is responsible for carrying sensory and motor information to and from the CNS. The autonomic system controls the involuntary actions of the body.

Central Nervous System[edit | edit source]

The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord. It is responsible for receiving and interpreting sensory information from all parts of the body.

Function[edit | edit source]

The sensory nervous system's primary function is to provide a link from the environment to our bodies and vice versa. It does this by receiving information about changes in the environment and relaying it to the CNS. The CNS then processes this information and decides on an appropriate response.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Damage to the sensory nervous system can result in conditions such as neuropathy, paresthesia, and neuralgia. These conditions can cause symptoms ranging from numbness and tingling to severe pain.
