Serie A is a professional football league competition for clubs located at the top of the Italian football league system. The league is widely regarded as one of the best football leagues in the world and it is often depicted as one of the most tactical and defensively sound leagues. Serie A has been operating for over 90 years since the 1929-30 season.

Serie A was established in 1898 in a regional format. The league adopted a round-robin format in 1929. The league has been home to some of the greatest footballers and managers in the history of the sport, including Paolo Maldini, Franco Baresi, Roberto Baggio, Diego Maradona, and Zinedine Zidane.

The league consists of 20 teams. Each club plays the others twice (a double round-robin system), once at their home stadium and once at that of their opponents', for 38 matches. Teams receive three points for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for a loss. The teams are ranked by total points, with the highest-ranked club at the end of the season crowned champion. The three lowest-placed teams are relegated to Serie B, and the top two teams from Serie B, together with the winner of a play-off involving the third to sixth-placed Serie B teams, are promoted in their place.

Some of the most successful clubs in Serie A history include Juventus, A.C. Milan, and Inter Milan. Juventus holds the record for the most titles, with 36 championships. Milan and Inter follow with 18 titles each.
