Seth Franklin Berkley is an American medical epidemiologist, specializing in vaccinology and currently serving as the CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Gavi, established in 2000, is an international organization committed to improving access to new and underused vaccines for children living in the world's poorest countries.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Seth Berkley was born on March 18, 1956, in New York, USA. He pursued his undergraduate education at Brown University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Berkley went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Rochester. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Harvard Medical School, serving at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

Before his tenure at Gavi, Berkley was the founder and CEO of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), where he worked from 1996 until 2010. At IAVI, Berkley led efforts to accelerate the development of a vaccine for HIV/AIDS, working closely with global partners to advocate for and fund vaccine research.

In 2011, Berkley took the helm at Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Under his leadership, Gavi has focused on increasing immunization rates in low-income countries, introducing new vaccines, and strengthening health systems. Berkley's work has been instrumental in negotiating vaccine prices, making them more affordable for developing countries, and in the implementation of innovative financing mechanisms like the Vaccine Bonds and the Advance Market Commitment for vaccines.
