Sharmila Anandasabapathy was born in Sri Lanka and later moved to the United States for her higher education. She completed her undergraduate studies at Yale University, where she earned a degree in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry. She then attended the Albert Einstein College of Medicine for her medical degree. Following her graduation, she completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital and a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the Mount Sinai Hospital.

Dr. Anandasabapathy has held several prestigious positions throughout her career. She served as a faculty member at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and later joined the Baylor College of Medicine as a Professor of Medicine. She is currently a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Baylor College of Medicine and the Director of Baylor Global Initiatives.
