Sharsheret (organization)
Sharsheret is a national non-profit organization that supports young Jewish women and their families facing breast cancer. The organization's name, Sharsheret, is the Hebrew word for "chain", symbolizing the connection between women who are diagnosed with breast cancer.
History[edit | edit source]
Sharsheret was founded in 2001 by Rochelle Shoretz, a former law clerk to United States Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, after her own breast cancer diagnosis at age 28. The organization was created to address the unique concerns of young Jewish women facing breast cancer.
Programs[edit | edit source]
Sharsheret offers a variety of programs to support and educate young Jewish women and their families about breast cancer. These include the Link Program, which connects women newly diagnosed with breast cancer with others who have experienced the disease; the Genetics for Life program, which provides information and resources about genetic counseling and testing; and the Embrace program, which supports women living with advanced breast cancer.
Impact[edit | edit source]
Since its inception, Sharsheret has responded to more than 45,000 breast cancer inquiries, involved more than 3,500 peer supporters, and presented over 200 educational programs annually nationwide.
Partnerships[edit | edit source]
Sharsheret partners with a number of other organizations to further its mission. These include the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute, and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.
