Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre
Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC/SKMCH) is a cancer center located in Lahore and Peshawar, Pakistan. It is the first project of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust, a charitable organization established under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 of British India. The hospital was founded by Imran Khan, a Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician and former Prime Minister, in memory of his mother, Mrs. Shaukat Khanum, who passed away from cancer in 1985.
Imran Khan was inspired to build a cancer hospital after witnessing the plight of poor cancer patients in Pakistan's hospitals during his mother's illness. He had a vision of making cancer treatment accessible to every Pakistani in need. The hospital's mission is to alleviate the suffering of cancer patients through modern methods of curative and palliative therapy, regardless of their ability to pay. It also focuses on educating healthcare professionals and the public, as well as conducting research into the causes and treatment of cancer.
SKMCH&RC is Pakistan's largest tertiary care hospital and specializes in oncology. It provides specialized cancer treatment and serves as a teaching hospital. The hospital is funded through non-profit means and operates under the patronage of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust. It has a total of 195 beds in its Lahore facility.
Since its establishment on 29 December 1994, SKMCH&RC has been at the forefront of cancer care in Pakistan. It has become a leading provider of radiation oncology services in the country. The hospital also runs various programs and initiatives to raise funds and awareness for cancer treatment and research.
