Shayetet 13
Shayetet 13 (Hebrew: שייטת 13, lit. Flotilla 13) is a unit of the Israeli Navy and one of the primary special operations units of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The unit is considered one of the best of its kind in the world and is often compared to the United States Navy SEALs and the British Special Boat Service (SBS).
History[edit | edit source]
Shayetet 13 was established in 1949, shortly after the establishment of the State of Israel. The unit was formed to conduct maritime special operations, including counter-terrorism, sabotage, intelligence gathering, and hostage rescue missions. Over the years, Shayetet 13 has participated in numerous high-profile operations, both within Israel and abroad.
Operations[edit | edit source]
Shayetet 13 has been involved in many significant operations, including:
- The Entebbe raid in 1976, where Israeli commandos rescued hostages from a hijacked plane in Uganda.
- The Lebanon War operations, where the unit conducted various missions against Hezbollah targets.
- The Gaza flotilla raid in 2010, where Shayetet 13 commandos intercepted a flotilla attempting to break the naval blockade of Gaza.

The training for Shayetet 13 is extremely rigorous and lasts approximately 20 months. It includes:
- Basic and advanced infantry training
- Parachuting
- Diving and underwater demolition
- Counter-terrorism and hostage rescue
- Specialized maritime operations
