Shelby is a city located in Toole County, Montana, United States. It is the county seat and the largest city in Toole County. With a population of 3,376 as of the 2010 census, Shelby is a small but vibrant community in north-central Montana.

Shelby was founded in 1891 as a railroad town along the Great Northern Railway. It was named after Peter O. Shelby, a prominent Montana rancher. The city quickly grew as a transportation hub and became the county seat of Toole County in 1914. Shelby was officially incorporated as a city in 1918.

. It is situated in the northern part of Montana, near the Canadian border. The city has a total area of 1.75 square miles, all of which is land.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
According to the 2010 census, Shelby had a population of 3,376 people. The population density was 1,929.1 inhabitants per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 88.9% White, 0.2% African American, 6.7% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 3.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.4% of the population.

Shelby's economy is primarily based on agriculture, oil, and gas industries. The city serves as a regional center for farming and ranching activities. It is also a major transportation hub, with several highways and rail lines passing through the area. The oil and gas industry has also contributed to the local economy, with the discovery of oil fields in the region.
