Shelby M. Cullom
Shelby Moore Cullom (November 22, 1829 – January 28, 1914) was an American politician from Illinois. He served as the 17th Governor of Illinois and later as a long-serving United States Senator.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Shelby M. Cullom was born in Monticello, Kentucky, to Richard Northcraft Cullom and Elizabeth Coffey Cullom. In 1830, his family moved to Tazewell County, Illinois. Cullom attended the local schools and later studied at the Rock River Seminary in Mount Morris, Illinois.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Illinois House of Representatives[edit | edit source]
Cullom began his political career in the Illinois House of Representatives, serving from 1856 to 1861. He was a member of the Republican Party and quickly became known for his oratory skills and legislative acumen.
Governor of Illinois[edit | edit source]
In 1876, Cullom was elected as the 17th Governor of Illinois. He served two terms from 1877 to 1883. During his tenure, he focused on issues such as railroad regulation and state finances. His administration is noted for the passage of the Illinois Railroad and Warehouse Commission Act, which aimed to regulate the burgeoning railroad industry.
United States Senate[edit | edit source]
In 1883, Cullom was elected to the United States Senate, where he served until his death in 1914. As a senator, he was involved in significant legislation, including the Interstate Commerce Act of 1887, which established the Interstate Commerce Commission to regulate railroads and later expanded to other modes of transportation.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Cullom's long career in public service left a lasting impact on both Illinois and national politics. He was known for his commitment to regulatory reforms and his efforts to modernize the American transportation system.
Death[edit | edit source]
Shelby M. Cullom died on January 28, 1914, in Washington, D.C., and was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois.
