Shettles method
The Shettles Method is a technique purported to assist couples in selecting the sex of their unborn child. Developed by Landrum B. Shettles in the 1960s, this method is primarily based on the timing of intercourse relative to ovulation and the theory that Y-chromosome sperm (male) move faster but are less resilient than X-chromosome sperm (female). The Shettles Method was popularized in the co-authored book "How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby", first published in 1971, with Landrum Shettles and David Rorvik. The book continues to be circulated in various editions to this day.
Principles of the Shettles Method[edit | edit source]
The Shettles Method is premised on the different characteristics of the X and Y chromosome-bearing spermatozoa. Shettles proposed that the Y-chromosome sperm are faster, but less robust, whereas the X-chromosome sperm are slower, but more resilient. Based on these distinctions, the method provides a variety of strategies that can supposedly increase the likelihood of conceiving a boy or a girl.
For a Boy[edit | edit source]
For those wishing to conceive a boy, Shettles suggested timing intercourse as closely to ovulation as possible. As Y-chromosome sperm are faster swimmers, they are more likely to reach the egg first if intercourse occurs near ovulation when the egg is released.
For a Girl[edit | edit source]
To increase the probability of conceiving a girl, Shettles recommended having intercourse a few days before ovulation. The theory is that the hardier X-chromosome sperm can survive longer and are more likely to be available when the egg is released.
Critiques and Limitations[edit | edit source]
While the Shettles Method has been widely publicized, there is limited scientific evidence to support its effectiveness. The general consensus in the medical community is that a child's sex is determined randomly, with approximately a 50% chance for either sex. Some critics also point out that the method's focus on timing of intercourse could potentially reduce a couple's overall chances of conceiving.
