Shoushtar

Shoushtar is a city in the Khuzestan Province of Iran. It is located approximately 92 kilometers away from Ahvaz, the centre of the province. The city is known for its historical structures, specifically the Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Shoushtar has a rich history that dates back to the Achaemenid Empire. The city was known as Adamdun in Elamite times. During the Sassanid era, it was an island city on the Karun river and was used to be known as Ayapir.

Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System[edit | edit source]

The Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System is an island city from the Sassanid era with a complex irrigation system. It was registered on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 2009 and is Iran's 10th cultural heritage site to be registered on the United Nations' list.

Climate[edit | edit source]

Shoushtar has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen climate classification Csa) with extremely hot summers and mild winters. Rainfall is higher than most parts of the middle east.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Shoushtar is mainly based on agriculture, particularly the production of wheat, barley, oilseeds, and rice.
