History[edit | edit source]

Shuanghui was established in 1958 in Luohe, Henan. The company was originally a state-owned enterprise, but was privatized in the 1990s. In 2013, Shuanghui acquired the largest pork producer in the United States, Smithfield Foods, for $4.72 billion, marking the largest Chinese acquisition of an American company to date.

Shuanghui's main products include fresh and frozen pork, processed meat products, and convenience food. The company also produces and sells poultry, beef, lamb, and various by-products.

Operations[edit | edit source]

Shuanghui operates through several business segments, including Meat Processing, Packaged Meats, and Corporate and Others. The company has a broad distribution network that covers all of China's provinces and major cities, and it exports its products to more than 40 countries and regions.

Controversies[edit | edit source]

In 2011, Shuanghui was involved in a food safety scandal when illegal additives, used to make pork leaner, were found in its meat products. The company has since taken steps to improve its food safety standards and regain consumer trust.
