Sigep

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Sigep (also known as the Sigma Phi Epsilon) is a social fraternity in the United States. Founded on November 1, 1901, at Richmond College (now the University of Richmond), in Richmond, Virginia, it is one of the largest social fraternities in the United States.

History[edit | edit source]

The fraternity was founded by 12 men who were dissatisfied with the existing fraternity landscape at the University of Richmond. The founders aimed to build a fraternity that was different from the others at the time, focusing on the principles of Virtue, Diligence, and Brotherly Love, which are still the guiding principles of Sigep today.

Principles[edit | edit source]

Sigep operates on three cardinal principles: Virtue, Diligence, and Brotherly Love. These principles guide the actions of members and the overall operation of the fraternity.

Virtue[edit | edit source]

Virtue in Sigep is about living a life of high moral standards. Members are expected to uphold and promote ethical behavior both within and outside the fraternity.

Diligence[edit | edit source]

Diligence is about commitment to academic excellence and lifelong learning. Sigep members are encouraged to strive for academic success and to continue learning beyond their college years.

Brotherly Love[edit | edit source]

Brotherly Love is about fostering a strong sense of community and friendship among members. Sigep promotes a culture of respect and care for one another, creating a supportive environment where members can grow and thrive.

Chapters[edit | edit source]

Sigep has over 200 active chapters across the United States, making it one of the largest fraternities in the country. Each chapter operates under the guidance of the national organization but also has a degree of autonomy to operate within the context of its own campus.

Philanthropy[edit | edit source]

Sigep is committed to giving back to the community through various philanthropic activities. The fraternity's national philanthropy is the American Heart Association, but individual chapters often support additional causes at the local level.

Notable Members[edit | edit source]

Over the years, Sigep has had many notable members, including politicians, business leaders, and entertainers. Some of the most notable include John Goodman, an award-winning actor, and David Boren, a former U.S. Senator and Governor of Oklahoma.
