Sign Language
Sign language is a visual means of communicating using gestures, facial expression, and body language. Sign Language is used mainly by people who are Deaf or have hearing impairments.
History[edit | edit source]
The history of sign language has been shaped by many events and people. The first known sign language system was developed in France during the 18th century by Abbe de l'Epee. This system, known as French Sign Language, became the foundation for many sign languages around the world, including American Sign Language.
Types of Sign Language[edit | edit source]
There are many different types of sign language, including:
- American Sign Language (ASL)
- British Sign Language (BSL)
- French Sign Language (LSF)
- Japanese Sign Language (JSL)
- Auslan (Australian Sign Language)
Each of these languages has its own grammar, syntax, and vocabulary.
Use and Recognition[edit | edit source]
Sign language is used by millions of people worldwide. Many countries officially recognize sign language as a language in its own right. For example, ASL is recognized as a national language in the United States.
Education and Learning[edit | edit source]
Many resources are available for learning sign language, including classes, books, and online tutorials. Some schools also offer sign language as part of their curriculum.
