Slick Rick, born Richard Martin Lloyd Walters on January 14, 1965, in London, England, is a British-American rapper and record producer. He is widely regarded as one of hip hop's greatest storytellers, with a career that has spanned over three decades. Slick Rick is known for his distinctive voice, narrative-driven lyrics, and the pioneering use of multisyllabic rhymes. Slick Rick was born in Mitcham, London, to Jamaican parents. At the age of 11, he moved with his family to the Bronx, New York, during the burgeoning period of hip hop. Slick Rick first gained widespread attention with his appearances on Doug E. Fresh's 1985 singles "The Show" and "La Di Da Di." The album featured hits such as "Children's Story" and "Teenage Love."

Despite legal issues that led to incarceration in the early 1990s, Slick Rick continued to produce music, releasing The Ruler's Back (1991), Behind Bars (1994), and The Art of Storytelling (1999). The Art of Storytelling was particularly well-received, featuring collaborations with artists like OutKast, Nas, and Redman.
