Soda

Soda (also known as pop, fizzy drink, or carbonated beverage) is a drink that typically contains carbonated water, a sweetener, and a natural or artificial flavoring. The sweetener may be a sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, fruit juice, a sugar substitute, or some combination of these.

History[edit | edit source]

The term "soda pop" originated in the United States and is derived from the phrase "soda water pop". The term "pop" itself originated in the mid-19th century in the United States and was used to describe the sound made when opening a bottle of carbonated beverage.

Health effects[edit | edit source]

Consumption of soda has been linked to numerous health issues, including obesity, dental cavities, and type 2 diabetes. Sugar-sweetened drinks are the largest source of added sugar in the diet of the U.S. population and provide little nutritional value.
