Sodium iodide

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Sodium iodide (chemical formula NaI) is an inorganic compound that is commonly used in the medical field, particularly in nuclear medicine. It is a white, crystalline salt which is produced from the reaction of sodium and iodine. Sodium iodide is highly soluble in water and has a variety of uses in the medical, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries.

Chemical Properties[edit | edit source]

Sodium iodide is a white, crystalline solid. It is highly soluble in water, with a solubility of 184 g/100 mL at 25 °C. The compound has a melting point of 661 °C and a boiling point of 1,304 °C. Sodium iodide is stable under normal temperatures and pressures, but it can react with strong oxidizing agents.

Medical Uses[edit | edit source]

In the field of nuclear medicine, sodium iodide is used in a variety of diagnostic tests and treatments. It is often used in the form of Sodium Iodide I 131, a radioactive form of sodium iodide. This is used in the treatment of thyroid cancer and hyperthyroidism. Sodium iodide is also used in diagnostic imaging to help visualize the thyroid gland.

Pharmaceutical Uses[edit | edit source]

Sodium iodide is used in the pharmaceutical industry as a reactant in the synthesis of various drugs. It is also used as a component in some types of intravenous solutions.

Chemical Uses[edit | edit source]

In the chemical industry, sodium iodide is used as a reducing agent and as a source of iodine. It is also used in the production of dyes and photographic chemicals.

Safety[edit | edit source]

Sodium iodide is generally safe to handle, but it can cause irritation if it comes into contact with the skin or eyes. Ingestion or inhalation can cause symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, and nausea. Long-term exposure can lead to iodism, a condition characterized by a metallic taste in the mouth, increased salivation, and inflammation of the mucous membranes.
