The Solemoviridae is a family of positive-sense single-stranded RNA viruses that infect plants. This family is part of the order Sobelivirales. Members of this family are known to cause various plant diseases, which can lead to significant agricultural losses.

Structure[edit | edit source]

Viruses in the Solemoviridae family are characterized by their small, icosahedral virions. The virions are non-enveloped and have a diameter of approximately 28 nm. The genome is a single molecule of positive-sense RNA, typically around 4.5 kb in length. The genome encodes several proteins, including a coat protein and proteins involved in replication and movement.

The genome of Solemoviridae viruses is organized into several open reading frames (ORFs). The 5' end of the genome contains a cap structure, while the 3' end is polyadenylated. The genome encodes a polyprotein that is processed into functional proteins by viral proteases. Key proteins include the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), movement proteins, and the coat protein.

Replication Cycle[edit | edit source]

The replication cycle of Solemoviridae viruses begins with the attachment of the virion to the host cell, followed by entry and uncoating. The viral RNA is translated to produce the viral proteins, including the RdRp, which replicates the viral RNA. The replication occurs in the cytoplasm of the host cell. New virions are assembled and released to infect neighboring cells.

Solemoviridae viruses are responsible for a variety of plant diseases. Symptoms can include mosaic patterns on leaves, stunted growth, and reduced yield. The severity of the disease depends on the virus species, the host plant, and environmental conditions.

Transmission[edit | edit source]

These viruses are typically transmitted by insect vectors, such as beetles and aphids, or through mechanical means. Some species can also be seed-transmitted, which poses a challenge for controlling the spread of the virus.
