Solu-Cortef

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Solu-Cortef (also known as Hydrocortisone Sodium Succinate) is a corticosteroid medication used to treat various conditions such as allergic disorders, skin conditions, ulcerative colitis, arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, or breathing disorders. It is also used to replace steroids in conditions of adrenal insufficiency (low production of needed steroids produced by the adrenal glands).

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Solu-Cortef works by decreasing the body's immune response to reduce symptoms such as swelling and allergic-type reactions. It is a steroid hormone that is produced by the adrenal cortex, one of the three parts of the adrenal gland. It is classified as a glucocorticoid, as it is involved in glucose metabolism.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Solu-Cortef is used in the treatment of a variety of conditions, including rheumatic disorders, collagen diseases, dermatologic diseases, allergic states, ophthalmic diseases, respiratory diseases, hematologic disorders, neoplastic diseases, edematous states, and gastrointestinal diseases. It is also used in the management of septic shock and acute adrenal insufficiency.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Solu-Cortef include nausea, heartburn, headache, dizziness, menstrual period changes, trouble sleeping, and increased sweating. Serious side effects may include mood swings, weight gain, puffy face, slow wound healing, osteoporosis, and eye problems.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Before using Solu-Cortef, it is important to inform your doctor about your current list of medications, over the counter products, allergies, pre-existing diseases, and current health conditions. Some health conditions may make you more susceptible to the side-effects of the drug.
