Sonoma Mountain AVA

The Sonoma Mountain AVA is an American Viticultural Area located in Sonoma County, California. It is part of the larger North Coast AVA and is recognized for its distinctive terroir and high-quality wine production.

Geography and Climate[edit | edit source]

The Sonoma Mountain AVA is located on the western slopes of the Sonoma Mountain, an isolated peak in the Sonoma Range. The AVA covers approximately 5,000 acres, with vineyards typically planted at elevations between 400 and 1,200 feet. The region's climate is influenced by the Pacific Ocean, resulting in cool, foggy mornings and warm, sunny afternoons. This diurnal temperature variation is ideal for growing a variety of grape types, including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

History[edit | edit source]

The Sonoma Mountain AVA was established in 1985, making it one of the older AVAs in California. The region's winegrowing history, however, dates back to the 19th century when pioneers began planting vineyards on the mountain's slopes. Today, the AVA is home to several renowned wineries, including Benziger Family Winery and Kamen Estate Wines.

Viticulture and Winemaking[edit | edit source]

The unique geography and climate of the Sonoma Mountain AVA contribute to the region's distinctive viticulture. The mountainous terrain results in a variety of microclimates and soil types, allowing for the cultivation of a diverse range of grape varieties. The region is particularly known for its Bordeaux-style wines, which are characterized by their complexity and aging potential.

Winemaking in the Sonoma Mountain AVA is focused on quality over quantity. Many of the region's wineries practice sustainable farming methods and hand-harvest their grapes to ensure the highest quality fruit. The resulting wines are often noted for their balance, structure, and expressive terroir-driven characteristics.
