Soutra Aisle is a historical site located in the Scottish Borders, near the village of Fala, Scotland. It is the remains of the House of the Holy Trinity, a hospital and friary that was founded in the 12th century by the Augustinian order. The site is significant for its contribution to the understanding of medieval medicine and the care of the sick and poor in Scotland during the Middle Ages.

History[edit | edit source]

The foundation of Soutra Aisle dates back to 1164, when it was established by Malcolm IV of Scotland. It was part of a larger complex known as Soutra Hospital, which served as a major hospital and religious site on the ancient road between Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders. The hospital was run by the Augustinian canons and provided care for the sick, poor, and travelers. It is believed to have been one of the largest and most important hospitals in medieval Scotland.

Throughout its history, Soutra Aisle witnessed numerous historical events and changes in its operation and structure. By the 15th century, parts of the hospital were demolished or fell into disuse. What remains today is primarily the aisle, which served as a small chapel and burial ground for the canons.

Archaeological Significance[edit | edit source]

Archaeological excavations at Soutra Aisle have uncovered a wealth of information about medieval life, healthcare, and diet. These excavations have revealed evidence of surgical practices, such as trepanation, and the use of various medicinal plants, highlighting the advanced medical knowledge of the Augustinian canons. The findings have provided invaluable insights into the healthcare practices of the time and the types of ailments treated at the hospital.

Preservation[edit | edit source]

Today, Soutra Aisle is preserved as a historical monument under the care of Historic Environment Scotland. It is open to the public, offering visitors a glimpse into Scotland's medieval past and the opportunity to learn about the historical significance of the site. The preservation efforts ensure that Soutra Aisle remains a valuable educational resource and a testament to Scotland's rich historical heritage.
