Spangles (sweets)

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Spangles were a brand of confectionery manufactured by Mars, Incorporated in the United Kingdom from 1950 to the early 1980s. They were notable for their distinctive, rounded square shape and were available in a variety of flavours.

History[edit | edit source]

Spangles were first introduced in 1950, during the post-World War II era of rationing and austerity in the UK. They were marketed as a luxury item, with early advertisements emphasizing their high sugar content, a rarity at the time. The sweets were initially sold in paper tubes with individual sweets wrapped in wax paper.

In the 1970s, Spangles were rebranded with new packaging and flavours, including a range of 'Old English' flavours such as liquorice, peppermint and treacle. However, despite these changes, sales declined and the brand was discontinued in the early 1980s.

Flavours[edit | edit source]

Over the years, Spangles were produced in a wide variety of flavours. The original range included strawberry, blackcurrant, orange, and lemon. Later additions included more unusual flavours such as clove, cinnamon, and 'Old English' flavours.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Despite their discontinuation, Spangles have left a lasting legacy in British popular culture. They are often cited in discussions of nostalgia for the post-war era, and have been referenced in various media, including the popular BBC television series, Life on Mars.
