Spanspek

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Spanspek is a type of melon that is popular in South Africa. The name "Spanspek" is derived from the Afrikaans words "Spaanse" (Spanish) and "spek" (bacon), and it is believed to have been introduced to South Africa by Spanish settlers.

History[edit | edit source]

The exact origins of the Spanspek are unclear, but it is believed to have been introduced to South Africa by Spanish settlers in the 16th or 17th century. The name "Spanspek" is thought to have been coined by the Afrikaans-speaking community, who noticed the Spanish settlers eating the melon with their breakfast, much like bacon, hence the name "Spanish bacon".

Description[edit | edit source]

The Spanspek is a type of Cucumis melo, a species that also includes other melons such as the cantaloupe and the honeydew melon. It is round or oval in shape, with a rough, netted skin that is typically a pale yellow or orange in color. The flesh of the Spanspek is sweet and juicy, and it is typically a deep orange color, although it can also be green or white in some varieties.

Cultivation[edit | edit source]

Spanspek is typically grown in warm, sunny climates, and it requires a long growing season. It is most commonly grown in the Western Cape region of South Africa, although it can also be found in other parts of the country. The melon is typically harvested in the late summer or early autumn.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Spanspek is often eaten fresh, either on its own or as part of a fruit salad. It can also be used in cooking, where it is often used in desserts or as a garnish. In South Africa, it is a popular choice for breakfast, where it is often served with yogurt or cottage cheese.
