Sri Lanka Medical Association
The Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) is the premier professional organization for medical practitioners in Sri Lanka. It is one of the oldest medical associations in Asia, having been established in 1887. The SLMA plays a crucial role in the advancement of medical knowledge and practice in Sri Lanka, providing a platform for medical professionals to collaborate, share research, and advocate for public health improvements.
History[edit | edit source]
The SLMA was founded as the "Ceylon Branch of the British Medical Association" in 1887. It was established to bring together medical professionals in Ceylon, as Sri Lanka was then known, to discuss medical issues and advancements. In 1951, following the independence of Sri Lanka, the association was renamed the "Ceylon Medical Association". It adopted its current name, the "Sri Lanka Medical Association", in 1972, reflecting the country's change of name to Sri Lanka.
Objectives[edit | edit source]
The primary objectives of the SLMA are to promote the advancement of medical and health sciences, to maintain the honor and interests of the medical profession, and to promote the health and well-being of the public. The association achieves these goals through various activities, including organizing scientific sessions, publishing medical journals, and engaging in public health advocacy.
Activities[edit | edit source]
The SLMA organizes an annual scientific congress, which is a major event in the Sri Lankan medical calendar. This congress provides a platform for medical professionals to present their research, discuss new developments in medicine, and network with colleagues. The association also publishes the "Ceylon Medical Journal", which is a peer-reviewed medical journal that disseminates research findings and reviews in the field of medicine.
Membership[edit | edit source]
Membership in the SLMA is open to all registered medical practitioners in Sri Lanka. The association has several categories of membership, including ordinary members, life members, and honorary members. Members benefit from access to the association's resources, including its library and publications, as well as opportunities for professional development and networking.
Governance[edit | edit source]
The SLMA is governed by an elected council, which includes a president, vice-presidents, a secretary, a treasurer, and other council members. The council is responsible for overseeing the activities of the association and ensuring that it meets its objectives. The president of the SLMA is a prominent figure in the Sri Lankan medical community and represents the association at national and international forums.
